Founded with an initial intake of 360 students, the college was inaugurated by then Chief Minister M. Bhakthavatsalam in September 1964. Originally affiliated with the University of Madras, it later came under Thiruvalluvar University before joining Annamalai University in 2021. Over the decades, the college has expanded from pre-university courses to a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil., and Ph.D. programs in arts, science, and commerce.
